National moth night at Siding Lane, 12th April 2003

National Moth night 2003 was on the early date of 12th April. This is an annual event, held across the country, on different dates each year, with the joint aims of targeting endangered species and raising public awareness of moths. The target species this year were Orange Upperwing and Swordgrass, both of which we had virtually no chance of catching anywhere in the North West. Despite this, the early date and the cool temperatures, we did well, and had a very enjoyable evening. We set up three traps at Siding Lane, and also a number of mammal traps. Everything caught, is of course released unharmed.

The Birch woodlands are home to many bird species, including Willow Tits, but the main species we were looking for was Woodcock, which can be seen roding (displaying) over the woodland at dusk.

But it was the creatures of the night which we had come to see. As you can see, moth traps are not the most inconspicuous of traps!

We set 15 mammal traps, but on this occasion were unlucky and didn't catch any.

However, we did better than expected for moths, a selection of which we put into pots for people to look at during the evening.

Below is a list of moths that we caught.
